Hazelview Investments: 50 years of recession data give hope for REITs

Claudia Reich Floyd

Regardless of whether a recession is imminent: The road ahead for listed real estate investment trusts (REITs) is promising. This is emphasised by Hazelview Investments, an international asset manager with a focus on real estate investments, after evaluating 50 years of historical recession data – starting with the oil crisis in the early 1970s up to the Covid recession from February 2020. According to this analysis, REITs in the US achieved an average cumulative total return of around 30 percent over the next two years and even around 50 percent over three years from the first negative quarter.
